Hi all,
I have a Nikon Coolpix 950 that works with CF-cards. The
original 8MB card still works flawlessly but the size is
a bit flawed ;-)
Two years back I got a 256MB card that's become flakey
recently, I can still use it in my card-reader as a
portable disk but when I put it in the camera, the
Coolpix tells me that it can't be used :-(
Yesterday I bought a "fast, 70x" 512MB CF-card that
formats well in the camera (in fact the Nikon saw it
right out of the box, 525 pix in "fine" quality) BUT:
When I put it in the reader it doesn't mount under OSX
(message: OSX can't read blah blah) and when I use Disk
Utility to check it DU tells me that Desktop DF has too
many clusters for a non-FAT partition, although it also
says before in Phase 1: Read FAT. So DU has already
determined that it's a FAT-disk. What gives??
When I boot into OS9 with the card in the reader plugged
in the beige just crashes (freezes at half empty desktop)
when formatted or otherwise it asks to format it and all
goes well.
When I put the card back in the Nikon all seems well. Can
the card-reader be defective? I could use the card before
to migrate data from my beige to an iMac when it was
formatted as HFS+.
Also when I already had made photos with that card and it
wouldn't mount I repaired it with Norton and lo and
behold: it still had the name which I had given it when
migrating data to the iMac even though after that I had
it formatted in the camera and taken pictures with it!!
Could it be my trusty Coolpix is going south?? I'm
completely flustered by this one. I hope somebody helpful
can give me some hints.
A last question: it's possible to format all sorts of
disks as FAT or DOS under OS9 but I can't find a
possibility to do that in OSX although OSX reads FAT
disks fine. How come?
Sorry for the long rant ...
Jrg.
