A last question: it's possible to format all sorts of
disks as FAT or DOS under OS9 but I can't find a
possibility to do that in OSX although OSX reads FAT
disks fine. How come?

I hope someone has a more detailed answer to this than I have since there are a
lot of things I don't understand about it too.

But I do know that FAT is a Dos term that refers to, I think, something like
block size. You can't format a card on a Mac in the correct FAT since most
cameras require FAT 16 and Mac only will format FAT 32.

I also know that cards formatted in one camera may not be compatible in another
camera unless reformatted in that camera. I once tried a HP (or maybe Canon)
card in a Nikon and currupted the card. That's how I learned about the various
programs than can rescue pictures from a bum card, or ones that were accidently
deleted. (Photo Rescue and several others.)

I also know that os 9 and os x read data differently from cards formatted in a
camera. I use a CF card to move stuff from work to home. Os 9 at work, X or 9
at home. Mac files written in 9 on a camera formated card (DOS FAT 16) will
have the forks seperated (data and resource)into different directories when read
in X. Non Mac-specific files like jpegs or compressed files like sit or zip
files are ok. I've never got to the bottom of this, though I did oncde see a
shareware utility that was supposed to work around it. The solution sould be to
format the card used only for data in a Mac, but then it won't work in a camera
unless reformatted.

I hope some of this clarifies your problem, but it may raise more questions than
it answers.

I also wish there were a good Mac utility to test CF cards. I know of one for a
specific brand, but not for all cards.
