Thanks for your reply Bruce. No offense intended but the words
'virtually any' worry me when I am in NZ and she is in Costa Rica
with limited language to explain her problems, serviced by an Apple
reseller who works out of a very small office / warehouse who is only
there once a fortnight and wants her to leave her laptop with him and
come back in a fortnight for only the smallest issues!
I was hoping that someone might be able to give me a brand / model
that they have used that worked right off. I have a Sony DRX - 510
external CD/DVD writer which wasn't recognized by OSX presumably
because it is a DVD drive and wasn't there on installation. Its fine
after loading Toast but I was kinda hoping to avoid this hassle for her.

Virtually any firewire external CDRW will work. OWC sells some.
