I was just at an Intel conference. There current Xeon's come with 64bit extensions and the new higher P4's do also. It is supposed to trickle down to all processors by the time Mac releases a mini with a P4 in it. I imagine that since the mini is a cheapo Mac it won't come with the 64bit enabled proc. But we'll see. The G4 isn't after all. My guess is Apple will choose Xeon CPU's for the higher end PowerMacs, like the G5. So a dual G5 now would equal a dual Xeon with dual core then. Or maybe quad core or triple something by that time. Needless to say it will still be a bad a** Mac and will of course be better than a current G5. By 2007 when PM's are using these procs that will be 2 years of advances in technology. There is no way that Mac in the future will be slower than a current dual G5.

Go here. <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/ universal_binary/> Under conventions it states, "Intel architecture 32-bit." So, this will be a big speed drop compared to a G5. Too bad too because they could have based it on one of Intel's other chips with 64 bit architecture like the "Xeon," for servers you can read about here, <http://www.intel.com/products/roadmap/server.htm>. But Intel has no low voltage 64 bit chips. It appears that Apple has decided that they are willing to sacrifice desktop machines in favor of laptops:-(

My understanding is that this is only for the development platform? To get people up and running yesterday, then 64-bit chips before release with just a recompile? Or maybe I dreamed that?

I can't see them going backwards in speed, otherwise why dump IBM? I think they are getting all of this ready (this year) for Intel's next batch of 64-bit chips.

That would make sense to me anyway.
