Nancy -- thanks for the quick response, but immediately after posting my question it suddenly occurred to me that maybe a reinstall of the Classic printing software might fix things, and it did! (Why it went wrong in the first place is another matter, since I certainly never *removed* any of that stuff). To answer the question, its a Deskjet 3745, direct connect to the USB port on the computer -- and for the time being, it works!
