Your cheapest and most straight forward option is the ethernet link, cables can be used up to 500ft so the distance would not be a problem. Assuming your dsl modem connects to your mac via usb, you can simply connect the macs with ethernet and configure the mac without the direct modem connection to connect to the net (using tcp/ip control panel) via ethernet using a dhcp server. Its not the best way of doing it but it does work and will save you the cost of a router as you only have 2 machines. Alternatively you can use wireless but only if you don't mind the chance that someone could 'piggyback' your connection.

Subject: [G] Setting up a network

Hello folks

I want to link my wife's G3 B&W with my eMac so that we can enjoy broadband via ADSL. What additional gear (e.g. router, connectors etc) do I need?

The computers are in different buildings about 150ft apart. One recommendation is to lay an ethernet cable between the two machines. Cheap, but labor-intensive, but possible.

Would a wireless connection work? What would be the cheapest way of doing this if it's possible? There would normally be 3 walls between the Macs but conceivably antennas could be put outside each room and in line of sight with each other.

As you can see by my questions I'm a complete novice at this so all advice, no matter how simple, will be welcome.

Thanks

Paul
