To James Fraser...

Please accept my apologies if I misinterpreted your comments and "put
words in your mouth." The reason why I did was erroneously lumping you in
with the considerable number of folks in here who do spend hundreds or
thousands of dollars on computers and computer stuff without even
thinking about it, or at least without giving me the impression they
think about it, and the more than numerous suggestions of "buy
this....upgrade to that..." as the only solution when someone writes in
with a problem -- which led me to believe that as a rule, the general
attitude is "you have the money to spend on your Mac, and if you don't
spend, you're a cheapskate." There's that, plus the fact that all my
life, every time I heard someone refer to someone else as a "cheapskate,"
it was meant as an insult. So that's how I got the impression I got and
why I reacted as I did. I'm sorry. Now, moving right along....

<To clarify: $150 is a reasonable price point for a machine that should
allow
you to surf with a minimum of unpleasant physical side effects (sharply
increased blood pressure, large patches of hair missing, fist-sized holes
in
your walls, etc.)>

Hahaha, I got a good laugh out of this. Truth be told though, not only is
my blood pressure normal, my patch-free hair is only 2-3 inches short of
waist-length, and even if I THOUGHT about punching holes in the walls,
I'd probably break my hand. In a case like that, I'd be more likely to
just throw the computer out the window -- if I could lift it that high
and throw it hard enough. ;-)

<Yes, I understand that you were able to get some real bargain basement
prices on machines. However, looking at the speeds listed, I can only
say:
I salute your patience and fortitude.>

If I have a speed problem, personally I blame it on my 56K dialup
connection. Even on 9.1 my offline apps ran like a charm (and on 9.2.2
they run even better). My emails come in fast and furious, but my web
browsing wouldn't hurt to have a boost. But then I'd have to get DSL or
cable (spend more money, of course). That being my only "complaint," it's
not much to be patient over.

<At the same time, I can't help but notice that the costs you mention are
far
from total. Things like, say, the cost of a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and
shipping for them aren't mentioned.>

The monitor, keyboard and mouse I had from my old 7200/120 were given
over to the G3 -- they were (and still are) perfectly functional and
compatible with the G3, so why buy new ones? I recently had to replace
the G3's floppy drive after all (dunno if you caught my posts on that
episode a couple weeks ago or not), so what did I do? I took the floppy
drive out of the 7200 and installed it in the G3. Problem solved. I don't
recall anymore exactly what I paid for the 7200 (hey, it was nine years
ago), and I haven't recently priced out these peripherals, so I don't
know what they'd cost. Shipping on the G3....well, can't tell you that
exactly either, since there were actually two of them. The first one,
which I bought from the Swap List, the shipping cost (UPS Ground) was
$11.05 (just had to look that up in my archives). The second one, I don't
know, because it was a Fleabay purchase my boyfriend handled for me --
he's a Fleabay regular, he saw it and suddenly announced on the phone, "I
just found a G3 for $15 and it'll be here within a couple of weeks." He
didn't tell me the shipping cost, and he's in a different state (shipping
costs vary by location, don't they?).

<And because not everyone has your patience and fortitude, I'd like to
see a CPU upgrade in there as well. By
my reckoning, that adds another $50 or so to the cost. I've seen 500MHz
upgrades on the Swap List for $50 or so on multiple occasions; that's
where the number comes from.>

I've seen them too, and I know this is going to make you laugh -- but I
can't see spending $50 on a just a chip!

<Besides, I think we can agree that it's always nice to have a project
come
out *below* a given estimate for a change. [smile]>

That's for sure. :-)

Well, once again, I apologize for my misinterpretations, etc.

~Yersinia.
