I realize that transitioning from 9.2.2 to X is a leap in terms of the OS structure, but I'm not as concerned about the learning curve as I am about productivity and system stability on my current machine. I also realize I'll have to invest in upgrading some older software packages to their newer
versions, but most that I have are Carbon apps anyway and should keep
working on the new system. Having to re-invest in Spell Catcher and a few other essential utilities that I rely on in 9.2.2 will hurt my pocketbook a
bit, too, but better late than never.

Hi Matthew

I have a B&W and with a 400 mhz processor I think you may have some trouble with slowness...I have an upgrade card, Sonnet G4 800 mhz and this thing is NOT the speediest thing on X. I upgraded to X for the same exact reason you want to. I was surprised at how cheaply I got some of the apps I needed, just went to the LEM swap list (closed to newcomers now, alas) and ebay is a great source for cheap software.

The biggest thing to spend money on is max out your ram, which you can do pretty cheaply - (4) 256 mb ram sticks at OtherWorldComputing (macsales.com) will cost you about $100 not including shipping, which isn't much, and you'll have a whole GIG of ram which really helps things a lot.

I love spell catcher and did the trial thing. When I went to transfer my old spell catcher files, however, there was trouble. I was still using SC 1.5.9 which is WAY old. The *president* of the company personally wrote to me and he finally sent me a little app that translated my old SC files over to X, which worked perfectly. BUT when I paid for SC and installed it, it REALLY slows down my computer, to the point where I'm not even using SC now unless I really HAVE to which isn't often because I got so used to not having it anyway.

OSX is beautiful but I've had a few kernel panics (basically a crash) but I NEVER had any problems with 9.2.2 and with the upgrade card, 9 totally SCREAMED on this machine. But the whole point of getting the B&W was to upgrade to X and you pretty much get nickel-and-dimed to death, but you already know that with old Macs (well even NEW macs!!).

OSX does NOT like SCSI so unless you want to have temper tantrums forgettaboutit (or if you are very lucky you might not).

So i'd say the very least you need is an upgrade card - and according to Gene, make it a G3 anything-but-sonnet and fill those ram slots with 256 mb ram sticks. Since you're not on the internet with it, that helps a lot.

But Gene can really help you out, he's amazing. He's got a B&W so he knows all the ins and outs of it.

Good luck.
