What is it that makes a server a server?

Any computer, with a little work, can be made into a great "home" server. That's kindof like hauling lumber sticking out of an SUV. Good enough if you're going to build a swing-set. Insufficient for building an apartment building.

Real servers are sturdy things, built with:

Higher quality components with redundancies, to reduce failures.

Bigger or no power supply (standalone vs rack-mount).

Terrible cooling systems - they often depend on the forced-air blast thru the rack to provide cooling. ...One comparison I recently saw pointed out that a rack full of 1 GHz blade servers puts out the same amount of heat as a kitchen oven, open, set to 500 degrees F.

Fast(er) i/o buses and interfaces to support lots of high-speed devices.

Hard drives are typically high-end SCSI (up to 2.5 Gbps) or FiberChannel (4 to 16 Gbps) or SAS (3 to 12 Gbps). They're faster and have a longer MTTF than IDE devices. HDs are often configured as very large RAID arrays. ...One of my clients is currently worried that his 4 PB array is too small. He's considering doubling its size now instead of early next year.

The operating system is specifically tuned to crunch data or move bits in and out faster (depends on server type), often at the expense of any interactive GUI response.

And, of course, it's loaded with the server type softwares instead of the client versions. oiy! The cost of server software licenses!
