Good. That means the modem is responding to the basic device probe. :)
This is a computer I received as a donation (along with 39 others! )from a very generous High School 12 months ago.
I checked with a local techie. When I said "school" he grunted... Apparently he's seen a lot of iMacs with blown modems... They respond to the Profiler, but OT will refuse them (as seen by a connection or controller type error when trying to select them in the Modem control panel). This is caused by trying to plug in the wrong type of phone line (digital pbx etc) or an ethernet cable into the modem's socket.
Since you've done the necessaries wrt software, he recommends either swapping out the modem, or just using a USB modem. Or forget the modem altogether; just plug it into a cat5 LAN.
