Hmmm. Just out of curiosity... Does this Big Giant Lock (or Two Big Locks as the case may be for 10.4) just affect GUI type applications, or does it affect stuff like Apache running as a daemon? Or does it depend upon how the particular application was written - ie, are some apps written at a level before the BGL/TBL takes effect?

I'd read a performance review that said this didn't make such a huge hit with workstation use (like an individuals desktop) although you do see it, but it did make a huge hit for server use (get to many threads open, the 1/10th performance shows up).

It's a long article, but here's one performance summary:

I give up trying to post excerpts to the list, the brain-dead content management keeps rejecting the post and I can't find why.

Maybe this will make it thru:

Mac OS X is incredibly slow, between 2 and 5(!) times slower (than linux), in creating new threads, as it doesn't use kernel threads, and has to go through extra layers (wrappers). No need to continue our search: the G5 might not be the fastest integer CPU on earth - its database performance is completely crippled by an asthmatic operating system that needs up to 5 times more time to handle and create threads.

It seems a pretty thorough treatment, the whole things starts here:
