Ken, Apple releases firmware updates for a reason, it's better to install those asap.
From the Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 2.4 article, http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n88009: "The Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 2.4 fixes a startup problem with some third-party memory modules and a problem recognizing when more than one gigabyte of memory is installed. On some early Power Mac G4 models, this update also allows a USB or FireWire storage device such as an external hard drive to be used as a startup disk."
