There's something I should've mentioned earlier: this computer is one of the ones which came equipped with a Zip drive, so the CD-ROM drive is on an ATA bus with that instead of the hard drive. Maybe this is it? Perhaps I could try switching the CD-ROM drive to the hard drive's ATA bus? First, I'd need to find out how to get the drive cage out of the way, so that I can get to the primary hard drive; any idea how to?

I think that is a beige MT, right? I only have one of those and it doesn't have anything installed in it at the moment, but I know all of the DT models I have had the ZIP drive setup that way also and I think they are setup as a slave on the secondary IDE channel, so that should not matter. The CD-ROM and the primary HD should both be set as master. OS 9 will boot from a slave drive on the IDE channel, but X will not. Plus the CD-ROM drive must be set as master to be bootable also.

Just a message from Doug...
