Thank you all for your speculations on the death of my monitor having
been caused by old age. Yes, this is a possibility I considered, even
though, no, I haven't been using it for four millennia, hahaha.

I can't complain too much though -- besides that I've got a replacement
lined up (and until I get it, I can use my Powerbook, which means I'm not
computerless in the interim) -- it's true that the dead monitor in
question got really heavy usage for close to a decade.

So, even though I'm temporarily pushing my poor little Powerbook to the
limit (wow, this experience is making me really appreciate my G3!), I'd
have to categorize this incident as a "pain in the neck," not a "tragedy."

Thanks again, all.

Well to be honest, without being able to touch and feel your monitor, from your description it sounds like the "fly-back" transformer had a failure. The "fly-back" is triggered by the horizontal drive circuit and it generates the high-voltage that lights up the screen. However when the "fly-back" goes, you usually will be able to smell it like something has burned.

Or since you once described that the display was real large (off the screen in all directions) then it is possible that the horizontal and vertical drive circuits had a problem. Since your monitor probably has an interrogated circuit chip that controls the vertical and horizontal drive its a good possibility that this chip bit the dust.

To trouble-shoot a monitor problem like you have describes is pure speculation and pretty close to impossible.
