Hey folks,
Ok I finally decided to use the empty 3.5" drive bay located under my
DVD
burner in my B&W. I wanted to place the external Imation Superdisk
drive
inside the B&W. I took the drive out of the external case and noticed
that
the pins for the power connection are different than the standard 4
pin
power connectors inside the B&W. Is there a way to hook up power to
this
drive or am I stuck with it being external?
(I'm guessing that the power jack on the back of the internal drive
isn't
a standard 4 pin molex style jack)
Really, no one could say without knowing the pinout of the power jack
and
power requirements of the drive. If the power requirements are the
same
for any random internal device, the existing power supply would be
able to
power it, provided you are able to wire the 5 and 12 volt lines up to
the
proper places.
If the drive requires something different than 5 and 12 volt lines, or
just happens to draw more amps/watts than what the internal P/S was
designed to handle (doubtful, but one never knows), you could either
find
a transformer to change the voltages to what the drive needs, or leave
it
as external.
I have to go with Bruce on this one, I have one of the drives laying
around here somewhere. Mine is an IDE internal version and IIRC this
drive does use the smaller PC floppy power connector. Radio Shack
should have the adapter which will allow you to use the standard power
connector in your B&W. BTW, it is possible to plug that style
connector in wrong so use care to line up the pins properly. Don't ask
how I know, all I can say is there was a lot of smoke and bare wires
were the result! 8^)
