   when installing a slave drive, does it come first on the cable

I don't think it matters. Just be sure to set the jumper
on the drive.

According to drivesolutions.com it does matter.

If you are installing the new HDD as a "single HDD drive" configuration, connect your new drive to the IDE ribbon cable and power cable. You are now ready to Initialize the drive. See "Initializing your New Drive".

If you are installing the new HDD as the "slave HDD drive" or as the "second HDD drive" configuration, configure the drive as a "Slave" with the jumpers using the chart on the drive label as a guide. It is important to note that the "Master Drive" MUST be at the END connection of the ribbon cable and the "Slave Drive" MUST be connected to the MIDDLE connection on the IDE ribbon cable. Properly connecte the drives to the IDE ribbon cable and power cables. You are now ready to Initialize the drive. See "Initializing your New Drive".
----------------------------------------------------
Also note using cable select;

Each IDE drive comes with a set of pins that identify it as Master, Slave, Single, or - on newer drives - Cable Select. Cable Select lets the computer communicate with the drive to automatically set itself to Master or Slave status. The G4 towers are capable of Cable Select, but most older machines will not work correctly if the drive is set to Cable Select. If you're installing a drive in a Performa, and it isn't recognized by the Drive Setup utility, then most likely the Cable Select jumper is set.
