Joy,

I need more hard drive space for my blue & white G3. Since it is a revision 1 G3, I can't just plop another IDE drive in there. The xlr8yourmac site....strongly
suggest that...an IDE PCI card needs to be installed. So if I'm
going to have to add a card, I may as well add a SCSI card, right?

That would be my thinking - actually *HAS* been with several "project" B&W's. I personally prefer SCSI over IDE/ATA when possible; but I *HAVE* done both types of B&W upgrades with good results.

I don't have any sufficiently large drives lying around, so I'm going to have to purchase whatever I add. So should I install an internal drive or buy an external drive, which would cost more but could be used with my iBook
and probably with whatever my next Mac desktop is?

External has its advantages, but bear in mind that B&W's can't boot from FireWire. I wouldn't recommend external SCSI unless you already have a SCSI case handy that you can use; just too many parts/pieces you'd need to add, and costs would add up in a hurry.

BTW, what do you mean by "sufficiently large drives"...?

If I go internal, do I go with IDE or SCSI"

Like I said, SCSI is my personal preference. I'm currently running OS X on a 10,000 RPM Seagate Cheetah attached to an ATTO UL2D Ultra2 LVD SCSI controller; noticeably more lively than the 7200 RPM Maxtor on ATA/133 controller that it replaced.

If I go external, should I go with FireWire, USB, or a combo drive? Should I buy a pre-built external drive or get a case and drive and put them together?

If you decide on external I'd suggest an ATA FireWire (and/or USB) case; just the case, not an entire external drive unless you get a real deal on it. You can easily install virtually any ATA drive you have at hand. Diligent shopping should net you something affordable. External FireWire would probably be handiest, and also more compatible with your next Mac desktop. I installed my B&W's stock 6 GB ATA/33 hard drive into a FireWire/USB 2.0 case that I got for a song via the Swaplist. I use it primarily for extra storage of installer files, etc....and for backup.

Could these decisions be based simply on how much the various setups cost, or are there other considerations?

I think cost should be a major consideration. We *ARE* talking about a seven-year-old computer here, and pouring too much money into just doesn't make much sense.

More specific advice would depend on you telling us exactly what drives and/or controllers you already have available, how much storage you'd like to add, as well as how much you want to spend to upgrade your B&W.

Feel free to contact me offlist for more details on my personal B&W upgrade experience, and/or for purchase recommendations.
