Just got my G3 today, I've now fallen in love with the G3 even tho
it's on 300MHz (it's a rev 1 B&W). Anyway, I've already got 2 old
10krpm 34GB Seagate Barracuda drives.
Anyway, my point is that I'd like to continue to use the SCSI drives
for
reliability, but my main problem is that when I first brought the first
SCSI drive, I put it in my PC and in 5 mins, I learnt how hot 10,000rpm
SCSI drives can get.
AFAIK, Barracudas that size and age are 7200 RPM. I believe the only
10K Seagates of that vintage are the Cheetahs. I've installed both
flavors in B&Ws with no ill effects, but how hot your drive runs
depends on which generation it is. First generation 'Cudas and
Cheetahs would possibly convert your B&W into a toaster oven; I'm
serious - you could probably fry an egg on one. Check the SCSI Hard
Drive page at Mac Gurus to find out which generation drive you have:
http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/scsi/seagatescsidrives.php. See
the "Regarding Heat" section toward the bottom of the page.
I'm worried that the B&W's cooling system isn't up to the job to
extracting the heat of 2 SCSI drives - does anyone have any other
ideas?
If you find out via Mac Gurus that your drives are second or third
generation (or possibly newer) you can probably figure out a way to
safely use them internally. However, I personally wouldn't install
both drives into my B&W unless they're *BOTH* third generation or
newer. Someone's bound to suggest a PCI slot cooling fan. If you have
an open slot, installing one of these in the slot nearest the drive
would help a lot. If you decide to install both drives I'd put the
oldest one (which will probably tend to run hottest) in the rearmost
drive bay, right under the PCI slots as it were...with a PCI slot
cooling fan right on top of it.
