After I copied my failing system to the new drive, I have three aliases of folders sitting on my new system. They are: etc, temp and var.

LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!

Those directories are critical parts of Unix, and many MANY things break if they're not there. These are normally invisible, but the process that Disk Utility uses to clone a drive over leaves them visible.

I understand that those three folders were not bothering anything. But they bothered me! They kept making me wonder, if three folders were out of place, were there others. It made me wonder what sort of grief I would have down the road, installing updates, when things were not where they were supposed to be.

I don't know much about the Unix underbelly of OSX, therefore I don't feel comfortable working in the Command Line. So, I took the long route and reinstalled the software via Archive & Install. Now everybody is back where they belong.

For Harry and anyone else who questioned Disk Utility's and DiskWarrior's ability to monitor a drive. The warning I got from DW said "The hard drive's built-in S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics indicate a failure or pending failure that could result in loss of data." Before removing the failing Maxtor drive I ran TechTools Pro on it. It passed every test except item #10 of S.M.A.R.T. Self-Checking. That was the Spin Retry Count. It listed Normal: 219, Worst: 198, Threshold: 223, and Status: Failing!
