Yet another in a series of pleas for Light and Clarity:

After a few years now of experience with the Classic Mac OS's, I have, by
reference and experience, come to conclude that it is good practice to keep
one's desktop as clear as possible, and, in optimum circumstance, to leave
no files, folders, or (Heaven Forbid) applications on the desktop. I imagine
the desktop to be analogous to a central hallway in a house, through which
one must pass to go anywhere at all. I further imagine that leaving piles of
junk, stacks of stuff, and litter of any kind in that hallway just causes
one to stumble and trip when going to and fro, and that by analogy, the
little electromacules that are sent scurrying by clicks and taps have to go
through the desktop to get anywhere and they tend to trip and stumble on
junk left on the desktop. And further, that makes the little critters mad
and they tend to kick stuff around and gnaw through boxes and crap the rug,
so to speak. (whew)

Could one of the Cognoscenti, please, discourse upon the nature of the
desktop folder, its relationship to the Finder, any less imaginary
information than that which I currently possess that might lend an actual
and reasonably detailed explanation of "really" why it is good practice to
keep one's desktop clear of everything but icons and shortcuts, and how all
of this might have changed in the move from the older OS's to X? (2xwhew)
