Very many thanks to those who have advised me on sound cards - solution was to get a pair of 'Creative' speakers, sound just fine now:)

More thanks to those who responded to the question floating in front of the finder icon - particularly Mr Bruce Johnston, boots up just fine now:)

Now then, an ATI Radeon 7000 card has been installed, replacing the stock Rage. However, when I play DVDs such as 'the Shining', and yes of course 'the Matrix', there is some juddering when the Player remote is displayed on the desktop at the same time as the movie is playing. The juddering stops when the remote disappears after a minute or two. Is this normal? Is it a consequence of too much load on the G3 350Mhz processor? Are there any fixes? All the latest ROMs etc have been installed from the ATI site. Would I have been better off buying the 9200?

The G3 B&W has now been upgraded to 1Gb mem, 80gig HDD, a Sony Combo, Belkin Wi-Fi PCI. This leaves the processor upgrade to sort out. Most probably will go for DayStar's MacH G4 600Mhz - there seems to be a lot of sales puff like '8 times faster' etc etc - will it really bring it up to 'Quicksilver' speeds, ie around 733, 867 Mhz???

Yes I realise some of you will say that I should have gotten a G4 in the first place! My reason was that I fell in love with a G3 B&W a few years ago and was not in a financial position to be able to get one then. Now I have one, and it has been great fun learning a lot about Macs in this way. I already have a PowerBook G4 1.33Mhz 12", but that doesn't leave an awful of scope for replacing components and learning about Macs in this way - which was the reason why I decided against getting a Mac Mini, but that would have been no where as fun as upgrading a G3 B&W and learning about Macs in this way. I just *love* popping open the hatch for a look around and identifying the innards. Hope this makes sense:)

Very many thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

Myles

I have a similar setup, but with a FastMac G4 upgrade running at 500 Mhz. I have the Radeon 7000 also and about the only time I experience any studdering while watching DVD's is when I forget and leave Mail and Firefox running at the same time. As long as I close other apps first then the movies are smooth as silk. As best I can remember, mine worked just fine back when I had the stock 400 Mhz G3 also, but I had the hardware decoder back then as well with the Apple DVD-ROM drive.

Just a message from Doug...
