Hmm...haven't tried this (I've got MDPro and have run into the same problem) but how about making a writable disk image (smaller than 1G, of course) with Disk Utility, copying MDII and your file to it and going from there?

(I thought the problem had to do with where you were saving the file, not where the app resided, or maybe that's how it manifests with MDPro)

I get the message when I launch MacDraw II, before I even open a document, when it wants to open a new, untitled document.

The disk image sounds like the way to go. I will try this first thing tomorrow morning and let everyone know the results.
