I have to second this. We've seen it first hand.
We gave an older machine (PowerCenter 150) to some needy friends. It
had been either my or my wife's workstation for a fair while, with
little to no problems.
It kept messing up on them. We'd take it back, run our array of disk
cleanup utilities on it (at the time, Norton/TechTool/DiskWarrior),
run it for a day or two, verify that everything was still good, then
give it back to them.
Sometimes it would mess up on them in as little as one day - and
these folks aren't power users by any stretch.
We finally persuaded them to get a minimum level UPS... I think it
had 5 min backup battery on it. Lo and behold, the problems went
away almost immediately.
