between my moves.

Is this what happens? You move your pawn from d2 to d4 and it moves to
the new space. You wait about 2 minutes for the computer to move it's
piece then you can move your piece.
or
Do you drag your pawn from d2 to d4 and it takes 2 minutes for the pawn
to appear at d4?
If it is the first, then that is what I have been talking about with
the level setting in the preferences. Open Chess's preferences under
the Chess menu and set the level slider to easy for a faster game.
If it is the second, then a video card would help. To give you an idea,
on my beige G4 533 512meg running 10.2.8 with a Radeon 7000, the pieces
move in the 3D view almost as soon as I drag them, with just a very
slight hesitation (1/10 of a second behind the mouse).
