Heh -heh -- try the Yellow minimize button. In default condition the genie effect is turned on (you can turn it off in Dock Prefs). It sends the window into the end of dock (but not in the trash), where you can retrieve it at any time.

Try hitting the F11 key on your keyboard. See, it shoves the windows off the screen, but leaves a grey translucent border to let you know. Hitting F11 again puts things back where they were.
