I just got an external firewire drive and the only thing that would
work is to have NO jumpers on the pins on the hard drive. Worked like a
charm. Thought I was going bananas!

Same here! I bought a USB 2.0 enclosure and the instructions, in the finest
Engrish, advised me to install the drivers from the accompanying CD and set
the drive jumper to "Master". Right! After about an hour installing,
uninstalling, reinstalling and some "colorful language", I found that no
drivers and no jumpers was the way to go.
