To update: Apologies to Epson Support for previous denigrating remarks. They responded next post holiday business day with a thorough reply.
My problem doesn't seem to be with Epson. I haven't printed enough to determine if my "disconnect" problem persists. But, in the process of correspondence with this list and a Photoshop forum I discovered my Epson Scan Utility which works fine. I never used it before because Photoshop 5 always scanned for me and still does in Classic. The persistent snag is that the TWAIN.plugin appears in the Photoshop 9 Import/Export folder but does not appear in the File/Import menu. I suppose an reinstall is in order.
