The help viewer pops up briefly and "poof" gone.

Try repairing permissions from disk utility, and deleting from ~/ Library/Preferences the files com.apple.help.plist, com.apple.helpui.plist and com.apple.helpviewer.plist if that doesn't work.

Sorry Cliff, I used some Unix terminology in there:

"~/Library/Preferences" means the folder Preferences in your home directory's Library folder.

"~" is Unix shorthand for "The current user's home directory".

On my computer "~/Library/Preferences" is the same as "/Users/johnson/ Library/Preferences" if I am logged on.

This distinguishes it from /Library/Preferences, which is the Library folder at the root of your drive, when you look at it you see Library, System, Users, etc. This stores some system-wide preferences and in general doesn't need messing with.

Deleting those plist files is the same as deleting a preference from the old System Folder:Preferences folder on OS 9 systems.
