I have recently brought my senior parents (76 and 74 yrs old) into
internet world.
The original imac is no good because the screen is too small.
I am trying to decide what to buy for them ... They are NOT going to
be watching movies, playing games, or listeningn to music.
This suggests to me that you have a wide range of options, since the
hardware demands of their intended uses are actually quite modest.
I am thinking that a cube or mini will probably keep them connected
enough -- we will be able to send letters and documents between
ourselves.
I think either of those would be a vary good choice, especially if you
already have a 17" or larger monitor handy
I'm thinking that 512 RAM (or maybe a little more) OS X Tiger, with a
big screen and wireless keyboard, and a writable disc storage system
should suit them well. This means a G4, correct?
Pretty much correct. You don't want to buy a G3 system for them;
they're getting pretty old now and won't be supported in future
versions of OS X. Virtually any G4-native system could easily be
configged to suit them; since their needs appear pretty basic you can
probably eliminate the towers from consideration and concentrate on
"simpler" Macs (Cube, iMac, mini).
Wireless keyboard's a nice extra, but hardly necessary unless your
folks like to do their computing from the easy chair.
Does this make sense?
Seems to; at least I think I follow your thinking.
From some of the prior responses I've seen I'd say that some folks are
"over-recommending" for your needs. The G5 iMac may be more computer
than your parents will ever need; and there's no need to go for the 20"
model if you do decide to go that route - that's pure overkill. Be
aware that Apple may not yet have resolved heat dissipation issues in
the iMac G5; units are still returning to Apple for repair at an
alarming rate.
If you feel the need for an all-in-one Mac (w/built-in monitor) I'd say
the G4 iMac is worth considering. There are a lot of them available on
the used market since the introduction of the G5 iMac, and I'd think
your parents would be very happy with a 17" 800 MHz-1 GHz model.
If they already have a 17"+ monitor they're happy with, go for a mini
w/512 MB RAM.
That's my $.02 worth....
