I hope G-listers might have some ideas on this once-removed topic.

I have a Yamaha CRW4416SX CD burner that I use with my G3 running OS 9.2.2 International English. The Yamaha shows up as a CD-ROM drive under Apple System Profiler, and Toast 4.1 recognises the burner, but the drive itself seems to have stopped recognising discs. The On/Disc LED on the front panel lights up green when I insert a disc, but after winking for a while it goes solid orange. If I try to burn a disc, Toast ejects the CD-R and says "Please insert a recordable CD!"

I've tried a CD lens cleaner, but I think the burner has to be functioning for the cleaner to work.

Yeah, unfortunately, when the drives die. This is a common symptom of a dead drive. The drive is spinning while it's winking, trying to read the drive, so the cleaner would work, therefore it's not a dirty lens.
