 The G5 iMac may be more computer than your parents will ever need;
and there's no need to go for the 20" model if you do decide to go
that route - that's pure overkill. Be aware that Apple may not yet
have resolved heat dissipation issues in the iMac G5; units are still
returning to Apple for repair at an alarming rate.

This is spoken by a person, who I suspect has a lot younger eyes than I
have ( mine are age 66 ), so the 20 inch monitor with excellent
resolution and a big screen for zoom, was about 80% of my reason to
purchase the G5 with 20 inch monitor.

Well, I'm no whippersnapper myself any more. My 56-year-old eyes have needed glasses for over 20 years now. Still reasonably happy with my 17" CRT, and I've been really impressed by the 17" displays on the iMacs (both G4 and G5) - very crisp and with slightly more screen area than the CRT. Of course bigger is always better, and the 20" displays are AWESOME. Still overkill for the "average" home user IMO, especially if you're as budget-minded as I am.

The G5 iMac has added owner authorized ability to open and work on it, which is much improved over the G4 iMacs.

The parents of the OP are relative novices, so I'm not sure that would be much of a selling point for them. Because of the heat dissipation issues they'd be forced to add AppleCare for peace of mind. Now we're getting into "how much do we need/want to spend" territory...the old cost vs benefit equation.

The G4 iMacs I saw were only slightly cheaper than the refurbished G5 iMacs on the Apple site. I would surely want an Apple Care Agreement on whatever I got so if it self-destructs, I don't have to worry. :-)
Just my opinion.

Buying new or refurb direct from Apple is the way to go for those who are comforted by lengthy warrantees. If money were no object I'd quite happily buy the top-of-the-line 20" iMac and add AppleCare. I've personally never felt the necessity for AC with desktops, just laptops. Again, the G5 iMac's heat dissipation uncertainties would lead me to consider adding it....

Even though it may require some savvy shopping I'd still say the G4 iMac can be a nearly ideal solution for the folks in question, especially if they don't already have a display/monitor with which they're quite satisfied. Perhaps the OP can enlighten us as to monitor needs...?
