Alternatively, you can try looking for one of those old Mic Apple used to sell or include with the Mac.

I've tried numerous applications for sound over the past year, but none seem to work well. I tried out Skype, and discovered the reason: my RadioShack muttimedia headphone/microphone set only works as headphones. The mic doesn't work.

Does anyone know a good set of stereo headphones with a mic, that would work with my B&W? Recommendations? Especially for inexpensive sets?

The built in mic input on most or all Power Macs takes a high level (1V) signal whereas most mics put out a low level signal (1-10 mV). So your mic might be working just fine but the signal is too low. You need a mice pre-amp to boost the signal high enough. Griffin Technologies had something that did it IIRC.
