Disconnecting the SCSI drive forced my G4 to boot from the IDE bus
instead of the SCSI bus. I still can't believe I didn't think of that.
So simple! That's why you guys are here :)
As I thought, the OS X installation is fine and it booted up without
problems. I reconnected the SCSI disk and all is well.
I have since gone into Open Firmware and checked the boot-device
setting. It is set to "ide/@0:9" and I wrote it down. Now I have it
on hand if something ever screws with the my internal settings and I
need to fix it without removing a drive.
However, this whole ordeal got me thinking about my drives. So I
booted to single-user mode (CMD+S) and ran "fsck" on the 10.2.8 drive.
There are problems. Lots of problems. I have tons of "Overlapped
file extent" errors, "Keys out of order", and "Incorrect block count"s
on various files.
Apparently, fsck reports "Your hard disk cannot be repaired." So WTF
can I do? Overlapped files are never good and are bound to be causing
problems. And what the heck does "Keys out of order" mean?
If fsck cannot fix my drive, is this something DiskWarrior could
handle? If so, what DW version should I look for? What are my
options?
Those are usually irrecoverable problems. Here's one account of a
happier ending

Disk Warriror may or may not be able to fix these problems. fsck is
also like Disk First Aid: you run it over and over until it gives up
or it fixes everything.
What I'd do first is back up my user data, then try fsck repeatedly,
or just bite the bullet and nuke&pave the drive.
