Adrian and Chris, I agree with you both. I love the roomy, expandable G4s, piercing together a good system from a barebones G4 up, adding things from here and there. It doesn't have to be expensive, all the hardware components are PC industry standard. But thats just it, everything can be changed and upgraded, so you never stop buying... I envy you US guys the low second hand prices of Macs 8-(

So yes, if you have the inclination and knowledge, a G4 is a better choice. And you do learn alot about computers by having one of these, easy to open, everything laid out tidily.

The worst thing about the Minis (and iBooks) are that they're shipped with slow RPM hard drives. Replace that with a good PC brand 7200 RPM hard drive and it makes a big difference. The rest of the Mini - the processor, busses and RAM - are fast enough. But I wonder if they fry after a while.

The pefect use for a Mini is if you live at several different places for longer periods of the year. Then you have a screen and keyboard/mouse at each place, just taking the Mini itself with you. Smaller on a plane than any Portable with screen.

But basically they are the idea of a disposible computer. Not very expandable, but so cheap to buy that you rather just buy the next model in a few years, instead on spending on upgrades. More expensive for the consumer in the long run, but that's always the case with disposible goods. I wonder what kind of second hand market that will create
