Well, I'll just have to rename my hard drive Lazarus - because it's back from the dead.

I was shopping for an external firewire enclosure and decided to pop over to the Apple website to check the user forums for some recommendations. While I was there I stumbled on a link to "reset the PMU". I followed it up, read the instructions and said, "What the heck, it can't hurt" - with the end result that my hard drive appears to be working fine (crossing fingers).

I checked it out with Disk Utility from the install DVD and other than a few minor permissions errors - mostly involving some twain files - everything checks out fine. It's still clicking occasionally, but it could just be that it's always done that and I've never noticed because I wasn't listening (I'm listening to every little noise it makes now.)

I meant to mention: When the trouble started the first thing I noticed was the fan suddenly started sounding louder. I wasn't sure if it was actually louder or if I was just hearing it louder - I'm dealing with a nasty sinus infection and it's messing with my hearing.
