What's up
with that? When I set up the system, I used my password.... the only
password I =ever= use and it isn't the right one???
Is there any to set up a password that I know and use?
It's this kind of thing that makes me loath to install X on my beige G3.
I don't like the idea of an OS deciding what I can and can't do. It's my
Mac, nobody else has access to it, and I won't have a hunk of code
telling me how I can use it. It's too much "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I
can't do that" for my taste.
Well, to be fair, root can be reenabled fairly easily.
And this really is a safety feature. Root is everything on a *NIX machine.
When one has root, you have the keys to the kingdom. With root, one can
totally trash a machine to the point of a format and reinstall is the
only way to get the OS back, all with a single command.
One of my favourite descriptions (edited to PG-13 levels):

No, you know an _administrator_ password. While administrators in NT
can do a lot of things, there is no equivalent to the godlike powers of
root on a Unix box.
"Godd**it - don't give me this "you don't own these files but you might
be able to take ownership" s**t. I'm logged in as a superuser. I own
this f***ing box and everything in it!"
