AFAIK, *DO NOT* use ECC memory in any Mac. Error Correcting Code
memory are felt to be unnecessary by Apple, so they simply don't
support it.
In the pre-SDRAM days, there were some Macs that used/permitted EDO
memory; Extended Data Out. Perhaps that's what you're thinking about?

memory and not buffered or registered. What does that mean and what
might indicate what kind of memory I have? If its just another name for
ECC Id still like to know if anyone has experience with ECC memory
working or not working in their G4s.
Yet-more sub-parameters of the PC-xxx memory family specifications.
In general, DIMMs that work in PowerMacs G3/G4 must be:
PC-100 or PC-133 Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)
..Depends on actual Mac model; some use either, some require PC-133.
3.3 volt
8 ns (125 MHz) or better
64-bits wide
168-pin
*unbuffered* only.
Speed codes:
3-2-3 (slowest), 3-2-2, or 2-2-2 (fastest).
Column address strobe: CL2 or CL3
(Apple typically doesn't specify)
Do NOT use:
Parity, ECC, registered or buffered SDRAM DIMMs.
32-bit wide, EDO or FPM.
And, of course, the DIMM/chip geometries matter too, and vary by Mac
model. eg: Some PM's cannot talk to 256Mb or 512Mb technology chips,
so a DIMM must be made of lots of 64 Mb or 128 Mb chips...
