After my B&W was stolen, I maxed out the memory on a Molar (G3 AIO, 266MHz) and put in a larger hard drive. THEN I loaded Panther with XPostFacto . . .

There's an XPostFacto for X, and it upgraded pretty
slick from Jaguar with that.

It runs beautifully on the Mac, save for a darkened in-built monitor. Instead of going back to Jaguar, I added a monitor to the monitor-out port on the Molar (mirroring, of course), and it looks just great. Wastes a bit of electricity, I suppose, but it works great. I'll add another video card to the set-up soon, for an added monitor (I believe two monitors are ALMOST enough; three, like I used with my 7100, is best).

What I like about Panther is its stability. Rock-solid. And Safari - it's my favorite browser. I've seen a number of pieces of software that demand Panther or better. So I have no desire to go a step back and use Jaguar instead.

XPostFacto was by no means a perfect install. Things happened that didn't SEEM to make sense. And yet Panther did start up on the first try. I installed from an eMac Panther install disc that I bought online, probably OWC. Part of the install may have been confusing, but I like what I ended up with!

Next step: faster processor and a video card.

I'll be using a Beige G3 Server to run OS 9 and play MP3s with an old version of iTunes and the MP3s on this OS X Molar. And maybe to control a SCSI scanner. We'll see. I also have a 7100 I'm going to try to bring up to G3 soon.

On my list of things to get rid of are numerous PCI Mac stuff, including two processor upgrades. I'll put them up on my site or on the swap list soon.
