FWIW, I have my home 802.11b router left to factory defaults for two reasons. I only have 2 neighbors close enough to steal my signal (one where both the husband and wife are ministers and the other's computer uses tubes). The other is that I am in an area of frequent power outages and I don't want to futz with resetting it every time I lose power.

No, I will not tell you where I live so you can mooch bandwidth.

None of the routers I've used or set up loose their settings on a power outage. They wouldn't last long in the market if they did.

It's still a good idea to change the SSID from the default. Even ministers go wireless and if they have the same brand and THEY don't change the SSID you could have problems.
