Apple has released a dual dual core 2.5GHz
PowerMac! So a total of 4 cores! I was hoping Apple would still
release some awesome PowerPC computers. I just hope the dual core G4
comes around that Freescale is working on. If it doesn't make it to
Apples lineup, Id at least like to see it as an upgrade option for G4s.
I am now very happy, though I bet the prices of these will be high for
many many years (hopefully Im wrong).
As the manufacturers ramp up new production lines, the wafer prices
are falling fast. (thank you very much, astronauts, for your
crystalogrophy work!)
IBM's dual-core Power5 began shipping in 2004. On-wafer L1, L2, & L3
caches, & memory controller, etc. *Each* core can execute two
seperate threads simultaneously (under certain conditions; depends on
resources needed by the instruction stream). Yea, that means the
quad PowerMac "acts" like an octa! Estimates are that this gives a
30% speed boost in hyperthreading, over Intel's best efforts (this
doesn't count the speed advantages of the rest of the chip's
implementation, etc).
Quad and Octa cores are next...
Have you seen the size of these things? You'll have better luck
when they switch over to Intel.
Remember - Apple was very careful about their announcements. They
didn't name any specific processor, other than say "x86
architecture". And they didn't say they were dumping Power... OS X
now works on either. My bet is lower-end consumer machines using the
new lower-power -M x86 processors, and high-end machines sticking
with Power.
FWIW,
- Dan.
