I was able to use a no-name brand on 10.4 with my Palm, because my Palm has the pc-style serial cable. But it wouldn't work without installing a driver, so having a X driver is very important. Mine came with the drivers on a mini-cd hidden in the package. It took me a while to figure that out, as the package itself had absolutely no instructions or information.
