It really depends,
I remember to have seen benchmarks (I think on XLR8yourmac) showing
that for certain games a dual CPU machine can be slower than same a
similarly clocked single processor one.
If the application is not multithreaded the second CPU is simply
useless.
Wrong! OS X's forte is handlng multiple apps running simultaneously.
That's where a dual proc shines. If you are running more than one app
at a time (and who isn't), a dually is the ticket.
Still, useless if you are running only ONE application, please have a
look at XLR8yourmac.
Have a look at the Quicktime to MPG4 conversion and the iMovie export
tests at the following URL:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G5/Dual_g5_9600_9800_tests.html
Another link that shows you that there is very little to no improvement
in many apps is the following:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4CARDS/powerlogix_dual_g4_7447_7457/
index.html (of course it also shows that there are huge improvements in
others ...)
If you use apps that are multiprocessor aware or run multiple apps at
the same time, in that case you are lucky with many CPUs.
In few words if you don't use Photoshop (or other pro apps) all the
time and prefer to play games, or use consumer level apps a faster
single CPU is better.
After all recompiling applications to use two (or now four) CPUs costs
a lot of money, so mostly the programs targeting professionals and
costing a fair bit of money are multiprocessor aware.
I guess that newer apps might be born so, but on this list many, if not
most of us, are running oldish hardware and oldish software (some of us
are still running OS9, if that matters:-). And many of us are cash
strapped, so if for my use of the computer I have to chose between a
single 1.8GHz and a dual 1GHz, I'd go for the single 1.8, you for the
use of the computer you have might go for the dual 1GHz.
In a perfect world we would all have a Quad 2.5 with 16GB of RAM and a
RAID system based on eight 400GB SATA HDD and two 30" displays, but ...

.
Even worse if you run OS9. The apps that really take advantage of a
second CPU are Phtoshop, Final Cut Pro, etc ... that are designed for
it.
www.XLR8yourmac.com is a good place to have a look at benchmarks.

Scott,
I think Bruce, Daevad, Pete, and Amanda are all correct. It would be
hard to make a comparison because of the type of app's being run.
I bought a Dual 450 Gigabit from another swapper a few years back.
He also had a Quicksilver 867 that I could have bought with about
the same RAM/HD setup. He also thought the 2 machines were about
equal in speed.
Maybe you can check some Xbench scores for a Dual 1 GHz G4 similar
to yours , then check some comparable scores for a single processor
machine and work backwards? Won't be perfect, but it might give you
some help. Probably will mirror the previous comments.
I recently upgraded to a Dual 1.3 GHz G4 (7455) and am very happy
with the results. Got a decent buy (GigaDesigns) from SmallDog.

Hey, G-Listers!
I have a hypothetical question for the collective genius out
there. Let's say you have a dual processor 1 ghz G4 computer, what
speed of a single processor in a comparable computer would it take
to exceed the dual processor performance? I'm guessing that it
has something to do with which programs your running. . .?
Thanking you for your input in advance.
