What a wonderful weekend it has been. First, I got a 120MHz bus
running in my Sawtooth. I have had installed in my Sawtooth for some
time a 533MHz processor from a Digital Audio, to replace a 450MHz
processor. It has been running at 400MHz with a 4x multiplier. After I
overclocked my bus, it was running at 480MHz. I upped the multiplier to
5x for 600MHz, and Mac OS X froze almost as soon at it started booting.
So, I installed a 100ohm resistor to boost the L2 cache voltage. This
boosted the voltage from 2.5V to 2.82V, and the cache chips are rated to
handle 2.9V. This was also the first time I have ever attempted micro
soldering. It took patience, but the final result was good. Anyway, I
think Mac OS X booted in about 3 seconds. I was blown away.
Anyway, the main program I use this computer for is X Plane, the most
realistic flight simulator for desktop computers. It is also the only
flight simulator (for desktop computers) that actually has the rules of
physics programmed into it. At 450MHz, I could not go supersonic
without the program getting overwhelmed. Surprisingly, at 480MHz I
could go supersonic. Probably the bus speed helping out, although I did
upgrade memory from 896MB to 1.5GB since I was at 450MHz. 600MHz is
just plain great. X Plane could still use some more processing power to
better control the artificial stability in some planes. But from 450MHz
to 600MHz, I spent less than $30.
