I'm running OS X 10.3.9. I'm trying to change various volumes on one
of my drives without affecting the rest of the volumes. Changes I'm
trying to make include (1) creating a volume from free space that I
originally left for that purpose and (2) erasing and combining two or
more adjacent volumes into a new volume. When I try to do it with Disk
Utility (v. 10.4.4), the only option I seem to have after apparently
making the desired changes is to click on the "Partition" button,
which gives dire warnings about erasing all volumes on the disk. Of
course, I cancel that. Anything else I do loses the changes I'm trying
to make.
I should also mention that the disk I'm trying to modify was probably
formatted with Silverlining Pro 6.something. I don't get any mention
of this from Disk Utility, however, so I doubt it's the problem.
I've also tried doing it with pdisk in the Terminal. After switching
user to root, I can execute the pdisk commands but can't write the
changes to disk. I know I could do this by booting into 9.2.2 and
running pdisk there, but I'm trying to get used to X.
Any suggestions?

Check out iPartition . I believe it will do just what you are wanting .
I've not used it. I do have their other app "iDefrag" I've been really
happy with it. Works well and support has been truly top notch. They
have come up with next day fixes when issues show up with upgrades to
the Mac OS. I've had luck with pdisk in OS 9 & Linux but it's way easy
to make a mistake with partition numbers etc. I've not used pdisk in
OSX .Will S
