I also have a bunch of VHS and other analog tapes (8mm, Hi-8 and (somewhere!) some S-VHS) that I'd like to digitize.
I have the following hardware: An ixTV card (with composite and s-video inputs) that's presently in my G4 Dual 867 MDD. I mostly run OS 10.3.9 on it, but it can boot into 9.2.2. (AFAIK, there is no OS X driver for the ixTV card.) A Beige G3 with an A/V card. I could speed the machine up with a faster chip (it's now 266 MHz) and more RAM, and even an ATA-66 card, if it were worth doing. Several 8500's (with the usual A/V) and a MaxPowr G3/500/1MB card I could stick in one. Plenty of RAM available and the same ATA-66 card as above. I also have available for use if needed two DVD/CD recorders - a Pioneer DVR-210 and a Lite-On AllWrite LVW-5005. What are the possibilities of the three computer-based set-ups? Could any of them capture and digitize any or all of the analog formats mentioned above with no loss in quality, so that I could later use and convert the digitized versions in whatever way I then decide to with no noticeable further loss? Regarding the DVD recorders: 1) Are they capable of retrieving virtually all the information (resolution, color, etc.) from the various analog sources? Or are they at least as good as the computer-based solutions? 2) Is it easy to later take the digital info from the DVD and convert it into other formats without more loss than would be occasioned by converting directly from analog to another digital format? - Aaron -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
