I'll second (well, actually 4th or 5th) the recommendation to use a DV camcorder to digitise analog video. The best part is you can archive all your VHS to DV tapes without ever involving your Mac. Then, if you want to do further edits and or/ burn to DVD you just feed the Mac the DV copy. Since the OP intends to get a new DV cam anyway, this seems a no-brainer.
I've got a older Sony D8 (DCR TRV-240) with S-video in and out as well as an RCA composite in/out. I use only ex-BU 8mm data tapes, which are very high quality, widely available and _cheap_ when purchased in bulk. Search eBay (Computers & Networking) for '8mm (lot, data)' not including those single quotes. eg: auctions # 5835887501, 8730889743 I've read the D8 mechanisms and carts are more robust than are the miniDV jobbies, but I have no personal experience to support that. Also, while others may have had satisfactory results with FW-video capture devices, I wasn't satisfied with the quality of the captured video from either the Hollywood device nor from the Formac device. Neither did as clean a job of digitising video as does my old Sony D8. hth, dan k ................................. http://macdan.n3.net/ carracho://dankephoto.dhs.org:9700 hotline://dankephoto.dhs.org:9500 ................................. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
