Hi, Listers,
My USB powered VST Tri-Media reader gives me the following message
when I plug it into a port on my D-Link DUB-H7 USB hub:
"The USB device 'AU9254 HUB' cannot operate because it needs more
power than is available.
To correct this problem, you can:
1) Plug this device into an electrical outlet if it has a power cord.
2) Unplug the device and plug it into another USB port on your
computer or other device that is plugged into a power cord."
I have a Kodak Camera dock plugged in (working), a Lexmark 5150 AIO
plugged in (working), and an Epson Perfection 1240 scanner plugged
in (working).
My machine is a G4 Sawtooth.
Is this message telling me I need a powered floppy drive? Or what?
The printer and likely the scanner are powered from their own AC
connection. The camera dock probably needs little or no power, the
camera battery is powering the camera. The media reader is likely
reporting it needs 500mA of current and the hub is requesting some
amount of current also. The total is over 500mA which is the maximum
the computer will supply. That is why the computer is reporting the
hub is using too much power.
Unfortunately a lot of USB devices report they need 500mA regardless
of how much they really need. It's likely this is the default amount
that the USB software inside the device is configured to use,
counting on the software developer to set the correct amount (which
they don't do).
So you need to power the hub. Pretty much all Hubs but the tiny
little travel models have a connection for an external supply. And
most such hubs come with a power supply.
