"Q14: What type of MPEG acceleration does Xclaim™ VR and Xclaim™ 3D
provide?

Xclaim™ VR and Xclaim™ 3D accelerate the playback of MPEG movies using the
hardware-assisted software decode strategy. The ATI 3D RAGE PRO or 3D RAGE
II graphics chip that powers Xclaim™ VR and Xclaim™ 3D has integrated
Video acceleration and Display functionality. Consequently Xclaim™ VR and
Xclaim™ 3D perform the color space conversion, scaling, and display of the
MPEG movie leaving the CPU to perform only the decoding of the movie from
the file to memory.

Note that Xclaim™ VR and Xclaim™ 3D do not accelerate the decoding of the
MPEG movie from file to memory. Dedicated MPEG hardware is required to
accelerate the decoding from file."

hum. Ok. So it's a half-way. The hard work is done by the card and the actual mpeg codec itself is run by QuickTime, on the CPU.

However, the card will not work for playing DVD's, at
least under OS 10 with the stock 4 meg RAM size.

But it *does*.

In my Smurf (OS X 10.4.3) is an ATI Rage XClaim VR Pro card, p/n 109-43100-00 AMC Ver 2.0. It has NO sgram upgrade on it. It plays DVDs just fine.

One exception: I just got a DVD Recorder on my TV (Black Friday sales rock!). I stuck a DVD+R from it into my Smurf and couldn't play it. Couldn't even mount it. Put it back in the DVDR and "Finalized" it. Now it plays fine in my Smurf.
