I don't have a solution other than deploying your own mail server but it is
very common these days for regular, non-spam mail to be filtered out or
severely delayed.
That's quite an issue for business mail, as the sender does not receive a
bounce and assumes the message was delivered and you didn't reply.
See if you can find a service that explicitly offers a package with no spam
filtering. Not paying for it may not be enough, as they may filter your
received mail anyway.
Let us know if what you choose. I am also looking for alternatives for a
new site.

Also, the included website tools appear to be able to do what I need.
They also seem to have some financial backing (2 page adds in Wired
are not cheap) and I do not want to be changing hosting companies
every year.
