Hi Hugh,

I was aware if the 120 MB barrier. However if the drive was partitioned into smaller chunks, Bruce could =kind of= see it. He could see the partitions and the stuff in them, but reading or writing the drive was a crap-shoot at best. The drive is now connected to the server box, shared over the network and Bruce is just fine with it.

I agree with you on upgrades! First of all I love tinkering and shopping around for the various bits and pieces can save you a lot of money. At first, I didn't buy my B&W machine(s) with the idea to upgrade, but the tinkerer got the best of me. Had some extra ram from a kaput wintel, then the G4 cpu, some bigger hard drives, an external cd writer, an external hard drive and a dvd burner.... and then Tiger! Bruce isn't a world-class machine, but for about a $600 total investment he's a very capable machine that does all I ask. The only limitations I run into is when I have 4 or 5 other apps open and then try to watch a DVD!

I also made similar upgrades to my 400 mHZ Yikes G4 and recall in xlerate your mac that these machines can only address drives up to 120 GB so that my be Amanda's prob with her USB drive.

It is very worthwhile to kick $400 to $500 in to upgrade a late G3 B&W or early G4 they have lots of life left. The only caveate is if you want a non-intel Mac buy it in 2006 or wait till 2007 to get a second or revised Intel Mac (sound strange to me). If you got caught with the awesome G4 that changed rapidly in 1999 it's first year you'll know what I mean.

cheers al west
